Generally, affairs do not last long (though there are exceptions) and occur between two people who are not married or otherwise committed to one another. Sex may or may not be involved in an affair, and cyber affairs can happen between two people who may never even meet one another. How Is an Affair Defined? Typically, an affair is considered a betrayal of trust. It has the ability to cause significant distress in relationships and there are many reasons why people cheat on their partners. Affairs are commonly referred to as adultery among married couples and infidelity among common-law spouses and committed partners. An affair can go by other names as well, depending on the type of affair involved. Infidelity can even happen with same-sex couples. Whats important to remember is that your definition of an affair is what matters most. Every person and every relationship is unique, and some couples may differ in the way they view this subject. Types of Affairs You might hear an affair being referred to as a love affair, an emotional affair, a fling, or extramarital relations. Some people simply call it being unfaithful or cheating as well. The most common types of affairs include: Romantic Affairs may be romantic, which is also referred to as an affair of the heart. These are sometimes in the form of sexual liaisons among unwed or wedded parties, though that is not always the case. It may also be considered some form or another of non-monogamy. Casual A casual relationship is a physical (and often emotional) relationship between two people who may engage in sexual relations. However, they often do so without the expectation of a more formalized romantic relationship. Emotional A platonic relationship may also be called a romantic affair as well. Termed an emotional affair, it is one that lacks sexual intimacy but has intense or enduring emotional intimacy. Emotional affairs can easily evolve into sexual affairs and be just as threatening to the primary relationship. Even when this type of an affair doesnt cross the line by becoming physical, the impact can be just as detrimental to a marriage, since the  intimacy  involved in emotional affairs can often have a degree of intensity thats deeper than a sexual affair. Cyber An online affair, or cyber affair, is one that occurs online. It may be anonymous; between individuals who may know basic information about one another, like their names, but have never met; or with someone the person knows in real life. Quite often, a cyber affair has emotional and/or sexual undertones, which is carried out via chat, webcam, email, text, and other forms of communication.?? The partners involved in a cyber affair may never meet in person, but the emotional connection and sensual nature of the affair can strain the committed relationships one or both participants are in. Sanctioned The term affair might also describe part of an agreement within an open marriage (or open relationship). With a sanctioned affair, a couple agrees upon which forms of sex are permitted with someone other than their primary partner and include swinging, dating, polyamory, and ménage à trois.?? An open marriage that works for both parties has to play by the rules that were agreed upon by both parties from the start, or else this type of affair can be just as damaging as the others. Considering the Risk of an Affair The one thing that all these types of affairs have in common is that they are very personal for all parties involved. They can complicate long-term relationships and often bring with them many emotions, both bad and good, depending on your position and perspective. Some people who are involved in an affair even find that its disappointing and not worth the emotional toll it takes on their feelings and their marriages. What to Do When an Affair Affects Your Relationship Just as in any personal relationship, there are no right or wrong answers when it comes to dealing with an affair in a committed partnership or marriage. Sometimes it can break up a marriage, while other couples may be able to recover from infidelity and save their relationship through communication and professional help. Certain warning signs and actions may point to the fact that your partner may be having an affair, and there are ways to cope when your partner is unfaithful. The Collapse of the American Dream â€Å"The American Dream has run out of gas,† said JG Ballard, a prominent English novelist. The American Dream was once a reality, a time when the citizens of America were the simple migrants who had immigrated because they sought a place where they could dictate their own fate. It was further developed in the 1770’s, and was referenced to by a great document through the words â€Å"all men are created equal† and that they are â€Å"endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights† including â€Å"Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. For generations, achieving the dream was the goal of all Americans. However, this period of happiness did not last long; for times change, and the people along with them. Today, the American dream has evolved into an unachievable illusion, caused by a capitalistic economy, human nature and the government. To start off, the American dream is unattainable because of the capitalist economy. For example, in the Grapes of Wrath, the Joads are unable to get jobs because of the income disparity in the economy. When traveling the California, a garish one-eyed man appears. He tells the Joads how the flyers that advertise job are actually fraud. To fill 800 positions they print out several thousand flyers. Employers use unemployment to their advantage and drive wages down further making it impossible for many to achieve the American Dream. The Capitalistic economy strives to maximize profits, regardless of human consequences. The Joads end up losing their so called American dream and their family endures much suffering which causes them to break apart Similarly, In the Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald presents the American Dream as a corrupt shadow of what it once was. The valley of ashes, one of the settings of the novel, is a capitalist wasteland that represents the degradation of the Dream. Fitzgerald compares the valley of ashes with the Eggs, the other setting, on many occasions. All descriptions of the valley of ashes are grim. The poor live in the ashes compared to the wealthy who live in clean and extravagant communities. This shows the disparity caused by capitalism; only the rich can enjoy their lives, while the poor must work long hours of manual labor in order to survive. The dream is nonexistent to anyone who is not born with a silver spoon. The time where one could work hard and rise from rags to riches is gone. Likewise, in the recent Muppets movie, the characters are hindered on their way to the American dream by the capitalist oil baron Tex Richman. He tries to raze Muppet studios and drill for the oil beneath it. This once again shows that capitalism does not care for human rights; it’s only goal is money and power. But naturally, since the Muppets is a children’s movie, Tex becomes a better person by the end of the movie. Sadly, it is not so in reality. People are not afraid to go out and kill each other’s dreams for personal gain. Next, The American Dream is unreachable because of the government. For instance, in To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson is denied the American dream because of the biased system. Long before the trial occurs, Harper Lee makes the reader recognize how prejudiced Maycomb county is. Atticus acknowledges this fact when he tells his brother John that the jury couldn’t possibly taken Tom Robinson’s word over the Ewell’s. And later, even though Atticus points out plenty of holes and discrepancies with Mayella’s story, the jury refuses to believe the word of a black man. For Tom, the worst part of the deal is being imprisoned after the court hearing. This, Atticus says, is what led him to try to escape; â€Å"he was tired of white man’s justice. † The American Dream is nonexistent to all colored folks because they were denied their basic liberties by the system that was supposed to protect them. Likewise, in the novel Anthem the people of future world are denied their American Dream by the government. Equality, the protagonist of the novel, is a very intelligent person who desires only to be a scholar. Instead, the government delegates him the task of street-sweeping. Later, when he discovers the light, the government, instead of praising his accomplishment, shuns him and banishes him from society. Thus, his Dream to unify mankind and teach them about the wonders of the unmentionable times is killed. Lastly, The Night Thoreau spent in Jail presents Henry David Thoreau, an able man, fighting for his dream, though the government forestalls him at every turn. The Mexican war is going on in during the novel. Thoreau, the protagonist, does not believe that it is a just war and refuses to pay tax. He is so determined to prove his point, that he even goes and lives in the woods, creating a sanctuary he calls his Walden. Still, the government throws him in jail, and he continues to refuse to pay, boycotting the war. Finally, he is kicked out of jail and finds that he made no impact. The war was as Abraham Lincoln said was â€Å"of the sheerest deception,† as the people had no choice in the matter. So, Henry David’s dream was unfinished, and he died a heart-broken death at the age of 45. Finally, the American Dream is unachievable because of human greed. Although this great nation was founded on the noblest of principles, the founding fathers forgot one crucial detail; people always want more than they have. According to Daniel Gilbert, a highly esteemed professor and writer of the Futile Pursuit of Happiness, says that people have a tendency to miswant, or mistakenly believing that wanting something will bring one happiness. This leads them to think that money, is the most important thing, and soon, they stop at nothing to achieve more and more money, often throwing others under the bus. The novel, Death and the American Dream, by Daniel Cano, is about a Mexican revolutionary who wants to start over in America. He is actually an American citizen, but his only identification is his American passport. His friend, desperate for money, steals his passport and makes him look like an illegal immigrant to get a reward. It is a story of betrayal, politics and life; a shockingly real portrayal of life today. Similarly, they say that life is a race. What they don’t say is that if one falls, he is unlikely to ever get up again. In conclusion, the American Dream is now just an unattainable dream, instead of a reality because of the capitalistic economy, the government and human nature. When this nation was first created, American believed that wealth, prosperity and happiness could be created through handwork and perseverance. Maxwell Mc Ilvaine Period 5 I agree with the writer in where he says that bottled water is a large problem with how we're consuming water, along with other resources in California. Tap water is perfectly fine for consumption and the bottles used for water are very wasteful of plastic resources. It's also a lot more expensive than just having tap water and transporting the bottles. Another point I agree with is the limitations of water use in farms and cities. People are using a lot more water than necessary and it's very wasteful to use the little water we have left on crops that don't make a lot of money or for keeping lush golf courses alive. There is nothing in the essay I really don't agree with. What is missing from the argument is that e nvironmental water use falls into four categories: water in rivers protected as "wild and scenic" under federal and state laws, water required for maintaining habitat within streams, water that supports wetlands within wildlife preserves, and water needed to maintain water quality for agricultural and urban use. Most water allocated to the environment does not affect other water uses. More than half of California's environmental water use occurs in rivers along the state's north coast. These waters are largely isolated from major agricultural and urban areas and cannot be used for other purposes. In the rest of California where water is shared by all three sectors, environmental use is not dominant (33%, compared to 53% agricultural and 14% urban). My family can cut back on water usage by taking shorter showers, watering the garden for shorter amounts of time, and by washing the family cars less. We can use less water while doing the dishes or brushing teeth and by being more conservative while washing clothes.

American archeologists have found what they believe are the earliest examples of alphabetic writing at Wadi el-Hol, or The Gulch of Terror, on an ancient travel route outside Luxor. They found two inscriptions in a limestone cliff. This discovery gives researchers evidence to believe that the first alphabet was created by Semitic mercenaries and merchants two or threes centuries earlier then believed. Also, at this particular site evidence indicates the alphabet was the invention of ordinary people who rendered writing simpler and democratic by removing it from the official scribe who had mastered the complex system of hieroglyphics. Scholars that are familiar with the early Semitic alphabets they can recognize certain figures in the inscriptions. The symbol for M appears to be a wavy line derived from the hieroglyphic sign for water. The letter A apparently grew out of the pictogram for an ox head, while Semitic B developed from the image of a house. The letters A and B wer e eventually absorbed into Greek, which gave the western world the alphabet (Bone,1999,p.37). This find by the archeologist is very important, it will give us more of an idea of how are current alphabet was created. They give the letter M for an example of water; maybe it means more then just water, how about high waters or rough waters. The sociology of the family is a common component of introductory and pre-university academic curricula, as the family makes for a familiar and illustrative example of patterned social relations and dynamics. Overview Within the sociology of the family, there are several key areas of inquiry. These include: Focus on the demographic makeup of families, and how this shifts over time or from place to place. For example, research has found that millennial adults are more likely to live at home with their parents than any other previous generation.How social class affects a family and how the family itself might help or hinder the social mobility of its members.Social dynamics within families, including the specific roles family members play in relation to one another, and what families do together on a daily basis and in the long-term. Marital disunions are also studied, as divorce rates have risen over the past several decades. Family Systems and Other Institutions Sociologists who study the family also look at how other institutions affect and are affected by family systems.
